Most smokers have contemplated on quitting smoking at some point in their lives.  However, quitting smoking is easier said than done.  Smokers usually encounter many factors that force them to continue smoking, regardless of the obvious health hazards that smoking pose.

Some of these include social and psychological factors.  However, there have been several approaches that have been designed to address these factors, particularly the psychological consideration.  One of these approaches is quit smoking hypnosis.

Most quitters agree that it is psychologically hard for them to completely give up smoking.  The usual thinking is that smoking has been an important routine in their lives.   Smokers usually smoke after having a hearty meal,  or enjoying a night out.

Smoking is also done during periods of anxiety and depression.  Thus, smoking has become a fixture, something that smokers cannot live without.   This is where quit smoking hypnosis can come in.  By changing the psychology of smokers, quit smoking hypnosis allows quitters to have a stronger resolve in quitting smoking.

Hypnosis is usually associated as a circus show, as a person is often put into disillusion to achieve a particular objective.  In the case of smokers, however, hypnosis is used primarily to change the attitude of a smoker towards smoking.

By altering the perceived reality of a smoker, quit smoking hypnosis changes the way a smoker views smoking.  If the smoker perceives smoking as an essential habit or routine, quit smoking hypnosis completely changes that.  Instead, the quitter is made to believe that smoking is something that he or she can live without.

Quit smoking hypnosis begins by relaxing the mind of the smoker, enough for the unconscious mind to take over.  A typical quit smoking hypnosis session begins by going through the history of the quitter, allowing the therapist to have a better idea on the past experiences of the patient with smoking.  After which, the therapist relaxes the client either through visualization or guided meditation, or through a combination of both approaches.

The quit smoking hypnosis session continues with a conversation between the therapist and the patient to find ways on motivating the smoker to quit.  For instance, the therapist might suggest that the quitter instead replace smoking with chewing of gums during periods when the urge to smoke kicks in.  The therapist may also suggest that the quitter take on a daily exercise regimen instead of smoking.

There is no substantial data that will back up claims on the 100% effectiveness of quit smoking hypnosis.  However, there are some studies indicating the relative effectiveness of quit smoking hypnosis compared to other smoking cessation methods.  For instance, one study showed that smokers who chose to take part in quit smoking hypnosis sessions were able to put off their habit for 6 months, longer than smokers who chose to go through nicotine replacement therapies.

Quit smoking hypnosis may not be entirely proven to be effective in helping smokers quit, however, there is still a great chance that quitters can benefit from this approach.
