Pre Columbian Americans were first to utilize tobacco. Native-born Americans evidently cultivated the tobacco plant and fumed it in pipes to use as a medication or in religious ceremonies.
Columbus brought back some tobacco l seeds with him when returning to Europe. However Europeans savored this smoking delight in the middle of sixteenth century.
When ventures and diplomats such like France's Jean Nicot on whose name nicotine is identified started to popularize it in Europe and it was in 1556 when for the first time tobacco was introduced in France Later tobacco became popular in other European countries as well like in Portugal in 1558, in Spain 1559, and in England in the middle of the sixteenth century.
The foundational productive commercial crop was cultivated in Virginia by John Rolfe in 1612 .Within a short span of time it was the largest export in the region. Within the following two centuries, the growth and demand of tobacco was increased as the highest hard cash paying cultivation. Initially, tobacco was cultivated primarily for pipe-smoking, chewing.
Cigars did not get fame until the early nineteenth century. Cigarettes became popular in the United States after the civil war .this was due to the popularity of the "Bright" tobacco, an unambiguously vulcanized yellow leaf which was cultivated in Virginia and North Carolina.
Cigarette sales soared up once again with the innovation of the "White Burley” a tobacco leaf and the conception of the initiatory practical cigarette forming machine, patronized by tobacco king James Buchanan in the early nineteenth century.
However later in 1954, R. J Reynolds fabricated the foremost filtered cigarette with the brand name first filtered cigarette with menthol was supplied in 1956, named as Salem. In 1962, Kent brand was founded, which introduced ‘mini- nit filter’, comprising asbestos.
1968 was the era when companies tried to sell the cigarettes without tobacco content. In the first place they carried lettuce leaves and were called as Brave, but they failed to lure the customer attention and hence were collapsed. 1980 and 90's was the era for extensive cigarette marketing and popularity. The developing countries of Asia were their specific target market.
Marlboro was the topmost rated brand of that era, as its sales overstepped that of Coca Cola. During 1980s smoking was considered a social taboo. Even cigarette ads were receded from radio television and other broadcasting media. However it existed in some concealed anatomy.
Later in the 21st century the society became a lot more acceptable and nubile.
Although the civilization still acts as a guardian for awaking people about the injurious and life taking consequences of smoking. It also aspires to protect striplings from coddle into addiction, it even provides copious space to those who wish to receive the uninterrupted ecstasy.
